Hello all,

I am new to this, i had my mother's tower PC asrock P4i65, P4 3ghz 512mb, 10gb HD, integrated video card and had Windows xp , by then i decided to install handy Linux and worked for 2 yrs then i decided to install her handy linux, now lately have tried installed Ubuntu mate and saw that used a lot of memory to process, so now installed Porteus 3.1 mate and was happy to see that Boots everything in 40 seconds with chrome, office etc!

What's not happy if that i seeing pictures and videos with strange color mix, like if had very low colour depth ?

Do you know the solution how to rise it's color depth???

If there is a way but i don't see it, i would upload screen photos of browser and YouTube image and screen shots of system info!

Thanks in advance

Silvio

Welcome sgtecnico.

You only have 512M ram? That's cutting it a bit fine for a graphical desktop. Try booting XFCE (minimal gui ram requirement of DEs here) instead, and see if colours improve. Otherwise only other solution is adding another 512M ram. Myself have 1GB ram which reduces to 879MiB, and it's just about manageable on desktops, but on the brink with kde5. :(

P.S. Another solution is a big swap space, as cpu at 3GHz more than three times as fast as mine at 880MHz. So may be able to make up though swapping throughput.

Hi Bogomips,

Thanks for repling !

I will try to change swap space to 1mb , will google how to !

If not will re install to Xfce version and see if make any difference.

Just a question, might stupid one, can boot usb with porteus XFCE version and copy and paste the image overwrite on harddisk one and boot with new version like ?

Thanks for your support

Silvio

You are joking?! You need 1GiB: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Swap

Also please put all long output in code blocks, Makes it easier to read. Please see your post how it's done, as I'll be editing it shortly.

Hi Silvio

No problem. :) If we are talking swap space, I just made one couple of days ago:

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=b2/swap bs=1M count=1024
guest@porteus:~$ 1024+0 records in
1024+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB, 1.0 GiB) copied, 1211.68 s, 886 kB/s
guest@porteus:~$ chmod 600 b2/swap
guest@porteus:~$ sudo chown root b2/swap
guest@porteus:~$ ls -lh b2/swap
-rw------- 1 root users 1.0G Nov 5 16:57 b2/swap
guest@porteus:~$ sudo /sbin/mkswap b2/swap
Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 1024 MiB (1073737728 bytes)
no label, UUID=165b93ab-7841-4b92-914a-02336e371812
guest@porteus:~$ sudo /sbin/swapon b2/swap
guest@porteus:~$ sudo /sbin/swapon -s
Filename Type Size	Used	Priority
/dev/sda11 partition	130044	127188	-1
/dev/sda7 partition	530108	202848	-2
/home/guest/b2/swap file 1048572	0	-3
b2/swap was the swap file. If you cannot use sudo, then execute as root, pw=toor. For guest pw=guest. If using a swap file, when you run probably need Boot Parameter (cheatcode) cliexec in porteus.cfg file. Can edit this in at the boot screen for your test run by pressing Tab Key. Then (in above case it would be full path) add on

Code: Select all

" cliexec=swapon~/home/guest/b2/swap"
(without quotes). The full path for your file, you will get from output of swapon command, as above.

Don't hesitate to ask if stuck. :)

Hi

I am lost on the last part ! on configure fstab !

From yr page to create swap https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Swap

I manaed to follow step by step on Manually - Swap file creation

On finall stage, edit fstab to add an entry for the swap file:
/etc/fstab
/swapfile none swap defaults 0 0

I found a lot of fstab searching

/usr/include/fstab.h
/usr/man/man5/fstab.5
/usr/man/man8/fstab-decode.8
/etc/fstab
/etc/udev/rules.d/10-porteus-fstab-update.rules
/mnt/live/memory/images/changes-161108.xzm/etc/fstab
/mnt/live/memory/images/changes-161107.xzm/etc/fstab
/mnt/live/memory/images/changes-161106.xzm/etc/fstab
/mnt/live/memory/images/05-devel.xzm/usr/include/fstab.h
/mnt/live/memory/images/003-mate.xzm/sbin/udev-fstab-update
/mnt/live/memory/images/001-core.xzm/etc/udev/rules.d/10-porteus-fstab-update.rules
/mnt/live/memory/images/001-core.xzm/sbin/fstab-decode
/mnt/live/memory/images/001-core.xzm/sbin/udev-fstab-update
/mnt/live/memory/images/001-core.xzm/usr/man/man5/fstab.5
/mnt/live/memory/images/001-core.xzm/usr/man/man8/fstab-decode.8
/mnt/live/memory/changes/etc/fstab
/mnt/live/etc/fstab
/sbin/udev-fstab-update
/sbin/fstab-decode

On etc/fstab content is here below, whose I have inserted the bold italic line below to indentify it and saved seccion, right?

# Do not edit this file as fstab is recreated automatically during every boot.
# Please use /etc/rc.d/rc.local or sysvinit scripts if you want to mount/unmount
# drive, filesystem or network share.

proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
devtmpfs /dev devtmpfs defaults 0 0

Hi, please use code blocks for output. Makes it easier to read. Please see http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php? ... 06e#p47319
  1. It makes no sense to make a swap file on the live system, as the only space available to you is in RAM, but you are strapped for RAM which is why we are making a swap file int the first place.
  2. You cannot mix fish with fowl:
    1. Either follow the terminal output from when I made my swap file or that from the link, but not mix them up! The terminal output resulted in a swap file being made on this system.
    2. Either make a swap file or a swap partition, but you seem to be mixing them up
Swap Files are made on Partitions which have a Real Filesystem, preferably on Hard Disk Partitions. Assuming sda2 has a filesystem. If not change partiton number accordingly. Following are the statements to make a Swap File on sda2. Copy and paste them into a Superuser terminal.

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/sda2/swapfile bs=1M count=1024
chmod 600 /mnt/sda2/swapfile
mkswap /mnt/sda2/swapfile
swapon /mnt/sda2/swapfile
# Verify
swapon -s
