120 sec. after /sbin/udevadm trigger

Please reproduce your error on a second machine before posting, and check the error by running without saved changes or extra modules (See FAQ No. 13, "How to report a bug"). For unstable Porteus versions (alpha, beta, rc) please use the relevant thread in our "Development" section.

120 sec. after /sbin/udevadm trigger

(I asked Hamza via PM where to post this one, and he said this thread is the right one...)

I did not change anything with that very machine, only some settings in the BIOS, but I cannot remember which one these have been... :unknown:

First I presumed, it might be an "dirty umounted ext2" partition on my USB pendrive". Since I realized that my 1.0 Porteus *not* makes the fsck during the bootup, so I fired up the 1.1_rc2-x86-64 to fsck the device / pendrive which has my 1.0-x86-64, and fsck'd the 1.1_rc2-x86-64 pendrive by booting with 1.0-x86-64... in the hope that the delay might be due to the pendrives having dirty ext2 partitions...
But in the end, both the 1.0 and the 1.1 still have the 120 seconds wait / timeout at the "/sbin/udevadm trigger --action=add" part and aborts after 120 seconds...

Code: Select all

live system is ready now - starting Porteus
INIT: version 2.86 booting
Updating shared library links: /sbin/ldconfig &
New kernel module(s) found - updating dependencies...
Triggering udev events: /sbin/udevadm trigger --action=add

udevadm settle - timeout of 120 seconds reached, the event queue contains:
  /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/1-7/1-7:1.0/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:0/block/sda (1472)
  /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/1-7/1-7:1.0/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:0/block/sda/sda1 (1473)
  /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sr0 (1493)
  /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.1/host0/target0:0:1/0:0:1:0/block/sr1 (1498)
  /sys/devices/platform/floppy.0/block/fd0 (2296)
  /sys/devices/virtual/block/md0 (2336)
Initializing LVM (Logical Volume Manager)
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
Setting system time from the hardware clock (localtime).
Mounting non-root local filesystems:
mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
Going multiuser...
And yes, the device Porteus was booted from was NOT mounted when I logged in. But I could mount it via
# mount /dev/sda1
I asked fdisk via "fdisk -l" what devices are known, and it was only the one and only USB pendrive there, and so it was sda1. *shrug*

Today the boot and only device was mounted when the system was up, but still the PC and /sbin/udevadm created again the 120 seconds delay:
Here the "screenshot" of the today's bootup info:

Code: Select all

^ copying content of /porteus/rootcopy directory
^ changing root directory...
live system is ready now - starting Porteus
INIT: version 2.86 booting
Updating shared library links: /sbin/ldconfig &
New kernel module(s) found - updating dependencies...
Triggering udev events: /sbin/udevadm trigger --action=add

udevadm settle - timeout of 120 seconds reached, the event queue contains:
  /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.1/host0/target0:0:1/0:0:1:0/block/sr1 (1498)
  /sys/devices/platform/floppy.0/block/fd0 (2294)
  /sys/devices/virtual/block/md0 (2339)
Initializing LVM (Logical Volume Manager)
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
Setting system time from the hardware clock (localtime).
Mounting non-root local filesystems:
/dev/sda1 on /mnt/sda1 type ext2 (rw,noatime)
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
Going multiuser...
Like I said, it happens with 1.0 and 1.1 Porteus (both 64 bits), but never happened in the past... It might be due to the BIOS of that machine creating an error and loading the defaults, but I have no clue what BIOS settings it might irk like that. =@

And like I said above, sometimes the boot device, the USB pendrive is mounted when I log in, and sometimes it is not mounted. :(

System: 3,5GB RAM (4 GB installed, but the motherboard and BIOS only supports 3,5 GB), CPU Pentium D 2.66GHz DualCore, ASUS P5PL2-E with newest available BIOS update, one DVD-burner, one DVD-ROM (both IDE), and the only booting device is a USB pendrive (I plugged out the internal sATA hard disc. :D )
Cheers!
Yours Rava

Is it possible to send us the X.org and messages's logs ? Use pastebin.com please

The problems you have posted are related to two versions of Porteus, and one of these are currently under Development.
So, to avoid mistake, please post the "development's version" bug under Development thread as I said in PM.

I've experienced the same thing on my desktop PC (but not my laptop) -- it does not occur in 32-bit, but it does occur in 64-bit mode, and I believe it happened in 1.0, and it is still happening in 1.1, so I think this is a bug that affects both versions. I figured it was buggy BIOS/motherboard, because it's kind of a cheapo board that has had some other quirky behaviour.

I took down some information on it at the time, but forgot to put a post up (oops, and thank you, Rava for posting!) ... let me rummage through my data and see if I can find the dmesg and /var/log/messages...

EDIT:

Here we go...

/var/log/messages (not all of it, mind you):

Posted after 1 day 15 hours 21 minute 6 seconds:
I was able to resolve this on my machine. In my case, it appears to be an issue between the kernel and my motherboard. I have an MSI motherboard with a VIA chipset, and the sound card (VIA VT1708/A) was not working. Google found a suggestion to boot with the parameter 'pci=use_crs'. After that, my sound card started working (both in 32 and 64 bits), and my boot process stopped hanging at the udev stage in 64-bit. So, maybe check for some hardware/kernel incompatibilities and see what comes up.
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

Re: 120 sec. after /sbin/udevadm trigger

One thing I forgot to add:

That PC has an NVidia card, like most of my PCs.
Still, when I boot it with given cheat code for another virtual terminal resolution (e.g. vga=314) then I get an error telling me that this resolution is invalid. When I press ENTER to view all available resolutions, now guess what is listed among them: 314, now when I tell the kernel 314 by hand it is accepted, but when I have told it via vga=314 in the porteus.cfg I always got the error. Also valid for both the 1.1 and the 1.0 (both again 64 bit)

But I have no clue what other cheat code that might hint to, you know, a cheat code for avoiding the 120 seconds delay...
Cheers!
Yours Rava

Post#6 by fanthom » 23 Dec 2011, 00:18

@Rava
any logfiles for 'udevadm trigger' issue? /var/log/messages should be enough.
Still, when I boot it with given cheat code for another virtual terminal resolution (e.g. vga=314) then I get an error telling me that this resolution is invalid.
i guess you should go with 0x prefix for hexadecimal values. try 'vga=0x314'

@Hamza
vga= parameter applies to generic VESA fb driver (works on everything) while nomodeset only to KMS capable drivers (intel, radeon, nouveau) which are loaded by udev, later in the boot process. these drives have their own, more powerful framebuffer and are replacing (destroying) VESA one - check dmesg for more info.

Sadly, no:
grep udev /var/log/messages or dmesg|grep udev
give no results at all..

Okay, I try that. But my other machines all worked well without the 0x prefix, but I insert it into my porteus.cfg to see if that will make a difference.
Cheers!

Okay then, here it is:

http://pastebin.com/kHL4JTBM
That's the 1.0 version of porteus running.

Could that part

Code: Select all

PCI: Ignoring host bridge windows from ACPI; if necessary, use "pci=use_crs" and report a bug
be the issue?

Verfasst after 2 days 18 hours 19 minutes 4 seconds:
Update

"pci=use_crs" does nothing at all, but al least "vga=0x314" is working as it should.

I now browse other forums for any solution, when I find a working one I will post it here. :)
Cheers!
