Porteus

Experimenting with changes. Put directory into iso for added security. Providing changes-ro and changes=/porteus at boot time, does not get /porteus/changes processed.

Would tend to categorise this as a deficiency. The reason being, that after changes are declared to be read only, there should be no reason to check if the directory for changes is writable. Changes just have to be processed the one time, after which, if the system needs to write out changes, they can be kept in memory.

Any particular reason the changes file can't be stored next to the iso file?

Yes. Wish changes to be frozen in the iso file for added security.
Iso can also be burnt to CD/DVD or one can use neko's live-usb tool, which looks very similar to one remember seeing on Porteus 3.0, but might be mistaken. Thus, all encapsulated in portable, bootable iso.

USB flash drives are portable, and bootable, and can carry encrypted save.dat files in addition to isos.

Depending on how the CD is burned it should be able to contain a separate save.dat file though not sure how it would be addressed in cheatcodes.

Something tells me if Porteus was capable of mounting pieces of filesystems which do not support access rights (like CDFS for .iso) then it wouldn't need .dat file for keeping changes when installed on FAT.

Can't tell if you're sarcastic or not.
I don't mean incapable as incapable at all, but to store changes made to its own filesystem which has access rights, linux has to have compatible container. Do you know a way to burn CDFS and part of ext3 filesystem in one session to the same CD and then access it all at boot time?

In lunuxrc, setting up the changes folder is done one step before setting up aufs.

1) find .sgn file
2) mount 000-kernel
3) setup changes
