Hi,
I own a NorhTech Gecko Edubook, which has a x86 compatibile low-power 1GHz CPU, it is a i586 compatible capable of MMX and lacks CMOV support.

While a vanilla Slackware (13.1 installed on it) "just works" the 1.0-beta Porteus won't go behind booting:
no cmov support
I installed 0.9 on the same flash stick, andhere I am using it :good: to post a bug report for 1.0 release :Bravo:

Thanks for mentioning this. Alot of distros have dropped support for i486, 586 and 686 processors that don't support cmov. I'll look into the kernel compilation and see if we can accommodate. If possible i'd like to have the 32bit version support the older hardware but it's a thin line keeping Porteus bleeding edge and retro compatible.

EDIT:
Compiling the latest kernel looks like you are out of luck. There is simply no option. Here is what Mr Torvalds has to say about cmov, he makes some interesting points against compilers using cmov for unpredictable outcomes. It is an expensive option.

Not without bumping kernel back a few notches. If i can find the right setup i will compile an older kernel and pray that everything runs nicely with it, then offer a retro version for aging hardware.

i see that kernel for 32bit BETA has "CONFIG_M686=y" while it should be "CONFIG_M486=y" to be fully i486 compatible.
I have used M486 for normal builds and M586 for PAE in slax-remix age.
Up to you, if you want to go back to i486 :)

heh ... if that's all that is required then v1 will accommodate i486+. Not sure that this will address i686 -cmov. Thanks fanthom.

RC1 _can_ boot (i write this right on my Gecko Xcore) but has to have noacpi in the boot line otherwise just hangs after initrd "okay"

Does the RC1 have apm at all? :D

Looks really nice once up (and speedy though).

Make sure you have APM set in bios if available and try passing noacpi api=on to kernel at boot time.

a report from Gecko (still on 13.1 Vanilla Slackware :oops: )
The RC2 downloaded okay, ran the md5sum check...

Boot graphic works as intended, all shows up.
Then I select the menu entry and it begins to boot

and after the initrd is loaded, the kernel just "dismisses" me saying the PAE support is missing on my CPU (as seen in my previous post @/proc/cpuinfo)
so,
either please provide me with a "howto" for my own kernel&modules build (kind please)
or,
"play int again Sam" this time without PAE support (for 3GB + RAM machines?) or make two kernels (I doubt this is the right way)?

First of all I was stunned how soon the RC3 got out.

Then I noticed upon finished download the kernel was changed from x86 to i486 (=Vanilla Slackware)
:good: :beer:
Then it failed to "lin_start_here.sh" install to the USB stick (=syslinux has wrong MACH?)
:sorry:
After I cp the /syslinux/* from RC2 over the RC3's directory, it installed without a glitch

And I made it Boot:
1. Graphic excellent
2. Begins the boot
3. No warning :good:
and just hangs in there indefinitely ( :shock: ??? :crazy: ??? :wall: :unknown: ???)
So besides HUGE thanks for the effort, I upload to 4shared.com my running 2.6.33.4 Vanilla tweaked config here:
And patiently wait for either a HOWTO or next .iso to test

It was soo close...

cest73, at what point during the bootup does it hang? Have you tried using the debug cheatcode? I'm curious to know if this hangs during kernel initialization, linuxrc, or afterwards. Take a look at the 'troubleshooting early boot failures' doc in the installation section of the docs on our main site (see the link in my sig). I doubt I can solve the issue, but maybe we can get enough information to help the maintainers with it.

Just one more thought I failed to mention-- I suspect you are right, that the kernel won't boot on your hardware. The reason I suggest the debug cheatcode is that it will display the kernel messages on your screen while the kernel initializes. These messages are suppressed by default, which is why there is a blank screen between selecting a boot option in syslinux and the start of linuxrc. With any luck, your screen will freeze with some useful messages from the kernel, which will help pinpoint your problem.

could you copy /sbin/init from v09 to rc3 an check if it boots ok for you?
also - pls upload whole /boot folder from rc2 (i dont have rc2 anymore on my hd) so i'll replace syslinux files once again for the FINAL.

ok - i have found rc2 on the server in net-install folder.

With debug=on i managed to vade into trinity with RC3
It remains to be seen what really stopped the show, as I only Ctrl+D'ed my way into the system

how do i make the thread solved?
It seems that it is related to configuring the frame buffer early on boot, failing to do so and hanging there. Does it on occasion manage to make the frame buffer configured, it boots just right. And it needs noacpi and apm=realmode-power-off to be all set.
