[Solved] Sound and volume plugin missing
hi I have been using proteus for a week and its quickly becoming my favorite distro, its really impressive! However i cant figure out how to get sound working on xfce. The panel does not show the volume icon, I have tried install the panel plugin (xfce4-volumed) as a separate module and also messed around with alsamixer but cant figure it out.
I am using proteus 2.1.

Re: Sound and volume plugin missing
hi freestyler,
please open Porteus Settings Centre -> System settings -> Sound settings and set ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) as default card (also do a sound test to confirm that it's working).

Re: Sound and volume plugin missing
Please try in command line alsamixer to see if you can get some sound.

I played with alsamixer but still cant get any sound. Is there a reason why xfce wont recognize sound settings?

Re: Sound and volume plugin missing
I have the same problem on my new laptop. The mixer applet shows but I get no sound. Changing the HDMI to the second device using the sound card tool doesn't work. Interestingly after compiling gnome-3.8 (with pulseaudio) the sound works. In your case I think we need to see a dump of: xpsinfo
Please upload the full information dump from the Porteus Settings Centre system information tool to pastebin and link here. It would be nice to see when and why the mixer applet crashes (perhaps this info is shown in dmesg or /var/log/messages).

Re: Sound and volume plugin missing
i think xfce suffered to some sound related troubles in 2.1 release (cant find a thread right now) so maybe you could try another desktop?
you can download standalone modules from here:

Re: Sound and volume plugin missing
If it works under a different desktop it could be a GTK theme issue.
The correct driver is being loaded so this doesn't explain the lack of sound.
When testing please boot into always fresh mode. I notice you have a 0099-settings.xzm module being loaded and we would prefer your to boot to the original fresh vanilla Porteus for trouble shooting.
Code: Select all

Re: Sound and volume plugin missing
sound card selector from PSC does not work as in this case we are dealing with the same driver used for both cards.
please try the solution ( ~\.asoundrc file) from this thread:

Re: [Solved] Sound and volume plugin missing
Nice one! Sound works. Well done and thanks for the help. I would have never worked that out.
I downloaded asoundconf.tar.gz and followed the instructions you gave.
Sweet!
