Hi, what steps do you recommend to manually localize Sensei in other language, as in Language Selection Tool. I need to localize keyboard, the system and modules created with makexzm

I've made a really good work with pacman and porteus!!

alright i uploaded the locale files for the 32-bit. the link to the xzm module is in the first post. this arch wiki should be helpful in explaining how to use them.

let us know how it works out...

Hey there sim...still here chuggin away on sensei.

i was having a strange problem w/gnome 3 too. i wasn't getting the "aww snap" page, the desktop was just a pure black screen. no mouse cursor or anything. it ended up being smthn odd w/dbus. i found that after 'reinstalling' dbus...after the system loaded, fixed it. so what i did was remove dbus from the core...and in the core module before squashing i put the dbus installation file at the location /var/cache/pacman/dbus-1.8.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz. i also have this command in the /etc/rc.local file:

Code: Select all

pacman -Udd --noconfirm --force /var/cache/pacman/*.pkg.tar.xz &> /dev/null
so that it will install dbus, after the system boots. doing it this way makes it work. two other packages i have doin this are gsettings-desktop-schemas and gdk-pixbuf2. i had to do that with viewnior also in the last sensei 2.1. not sure what that's about but with some packages...installing them after the system is booted....makes stuff work.

you're still using linux live as the base for alphaos i see. not much interest in porteus? porteus is really really nice. the cheatcodes are really nice. i'm not sure if u've ever given porteus a real good look...but it's really nice.

They are for me very similar, almost same, only Porteus has more people working on it so has more options like additional cheatcodes and different desktops availabale. Both are very good, but linux live scripts from its original author Thomas M. are very well made and clean, so much better than messy puppy linux, and I had no need to look further. linux-live 7 is perfect. Porteus could differentiate if they switched base to something else -like arch.

Isn't that different? I think Porteus is very unique, I haven't seen anything like it and am yet to see a distro as flexible.

Does GNOME 3 desktop module work without systemd?
Yes check out the 'FAT gnome' thread. I have had gnome3 running successfully on Porteus since Gnome 3.8. I will be discontinuing this desktop project because each new gnome release introduces too many headaches. There are not enough users of this version desktop (within Porteus) to justify the headaches.
only Porteus has more people working on it
I am interested as to how many people you believe work on Porteus?
Both are very good, but linux live scripts from its original author Thomas M. are very well made and clean
Indeed they are, however we don't use them. Fanthom has rewritten most of the boot scripts. We use the concept of slax (we are descendants) but the live scripts are now used to create Porteus.
Porteus could differentiate if they switched base to something else -like arch.
We also had an interesting thread about this. We now have USM which makes many packages available to the community. freestyler is also putting together a nice repository which should increase the number of available packages substantially.

I find that stifiling porteus arch version works rather very well with porteus as a basis. Personnally, I find it better than crunchbang or manjaro. This is an opinion. It seems to me an easier experience. But maybe I have a bias as I am more familiar with porteus.

There is also a very interesting debian version of porteus. Comparing the debian-porteus to arch-porteus makes you believe that arch as much as debian could be comparable valuable approaches to slackware for porteus.

It depends on how much you want to spend time on working with your box to do usefull work (less sweat); or spend time to do usefull work on your box with spending as much time with working on your box to do the usefull work (more sweat).

Sometimes I am attracted more to the arch and slackware way, but at other times, especially when I am in a rush, I pest and wonder why. I would say that porteus-slackware is the middle way.

@stifiling:
Struggling in porteus stock to build digikam, I decided to build digikam the photograph manipulating program on porteus-arch. There are error messages present before the buildup of digikam. What do they mean? Will they prevent porteus-arch to work properly? In addition, some optional packages or libraries for digikam are proposed but not built up. Usually, what is the effect of not installing these?

Here is my output:

WARNING: The host 'KMCs_Desktop' could not be looked up with resolveip.
This probably means that your libc libraries are not 100 % compatible
with this binary MariaDB version. The MariaDB daemon, mysqld, should work
normally with the exception that host name resolving will not work.
This means that you should use IP addresses instead of hostnames
when specifying MariaDB privileges !

To start mysqld at boot time you have to copy
support-files/mysql.server to the right place for your system

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MariaDB root USER !
To do so, start the server, then issue the following commands:

'/usr/bin/mysqladmin' -u root password 'new-password'
'/usr/bin/mysqladmin' -u root -h KMCs_Desktop password 'new-password'

Alternatively you can run:
'/usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation'

which will also give you the option of removing the test
databases and anonymous user created by default. This is
strongly recommended for production servers.

See the MariaDB Knowledgebase at http://mariadb.com/kb or the
MySQL manual for more instructions.

You can start the MariaDB daemon with:
cd '/usr' ; /usr/bin/mysqld_safe --datadir='/var/lib/mysql'

You can test the MariaDB daemon with mysql-test-run.pl
cd '/usr/mysql-test' ; perl mysql-test-run.pl

Re: Porteus/Arch aka Sensei (Porteus w/pacman package manage

Post#163 by francois » 20 May 2014, 00:39

Reinstalling porteus/arch sensei, I modified my first post on the first page of this thread so that my installation preferences appear in one place.

I will try digikam probably next weekend.

I have installed cups and libcups, but:
http://localhost:631/
ends up with the message host not responding.

Thanks.

after installing cups & libcups...run the command:

Code: Select all

cupsd
and see if that gets you a little further...

Hello stifiling,

cupsd will not change the situation. :(
