Having to update everything manually is a pain in the a, will firefox browser ssl bash and other important and ongoing security fixes be added to the porteus updater in future releases?

hi monjs,

'porteus updater' is meant for Porteus related stuff (our own tools, desktop/application configs, etc ...) and we do not push upstream updates over it.

you have two ways of handling security updates:
1) Porteus way (working with modules)
2) Slackware way (working with packages)

Porteus way is harder as you have to decompress each core xzm -> remove old package -> install new package (using ROOT= variable for pkg tools as explained here: http://www.fiveanddime.net/man-pages/installpkg.8.html).

Slackware way is easier:
- you should setup persistent storage
- use USM for downloading updates
- run upgradepkg name.txz

please be careful when upgrading packages compiled by us (marked as "ftm" or "jay").
in general - its good idea to backup everything

This is how I upgrade firefox but I did not upgradepkg just replaced the 04-firefox module with the newly converted one and lost bookmarks and addons.

How will I know what packages to upgrade if a vunerability is discovered?

The slackware or porteus way has some advantages and disadvantages, we hope you will get to find the bright side with time.

Ubuntu is not windows, but it might have a lot of similarities with porteus. I work with ubuntu too but I prefer by far the porteus way. All depends on what your are exactly looking for. 8)

bash, wget, glibc, openssl, dhcpd, httpd, gnupg, openssh, samba, & firefox to have a secure porteus 3.1 usb distro? (ty I'll install these now)

A fast booting live usb distro and I tried them all, Slax or Porteus are much faster than the Debian Live USB but apt-get updating all security and browser/email was very easy. No slackware background is my issue
