Porteus FAT gnome-3.8.4

Post#1 by brokenman » 02 Oct 2013, 15:18

Since the release of gnome-3.8 I have found it to be quite useable and am currently using it for day to day work. It integrates with a microsoft live or google account and allows one to work smoothly. Since mate is now included in the web wizard as a desktop choice, I see no point in continuing that project. If you have an interest in using the full gnome-3.8 desktop please post your vote here. I will post a video of the desktop in action later this week.

NB: Your system will need a compatible graphics card and for now the first release will be 64bit only.

Brokenman,

I want to be a tester for the new Gnome 3.8.4 but I do like Mate very well. Just keep me inform about it.

I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

What I like to see is A place to put my files and so I don't have to make them when I install Porteus.

So could you add them?

Welcome to Porteus gnome-3.8. This is a bare bones install of gnome 3.8 running on kernel 3.11.6 and Porteus 2.1 with some upgraded core packages. The ISO is 288Mb and contains most of the core gnome packages. I have included an application called 'bundles' where you can download packages that were stripped from the original gnome and I will update this list with time. Please be aware that this project won't receive my full time attention as my priority lies in the upcoming release of the standard Porteus following slackware's next 14.1 release.

Also in this ISO is a nice youtube downloader (command line: youtube-dl http://youtubelink) and a screen recorder which I made this recording of the desktop from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0d88uWDM-U. It uses ffmpeg directly and you can launch it using: screen-record from a console. The output will be in /tmp as an .mp4.

The windows key will launch the gnome-shell overlay where you can simply start typing to search for programs. You can also run your mouse into the top left 'hot corner' and browse the packages manually.

I downloaded the iso and it boots fine till the slim login screen.
If I log in a guest or as root with the right password I see this message : failed to execute login command.
If I go to tty2 and log in a root or guest and I do startx it fails with a message that gnome-session is not executed.

Gnome requires a fairly recent graphics card. After booting into text mode type this as guest:
startx 2>/tmp/bootlog.log
cat /tmp/bootlog.log

If you see a message about checking 3d acceleration then this is the problem.

I found the problem which I mentioned earlier.
I now wrote down the whole error message.

Code: Select all

rezice called 1920 1000
gnome-sesssion[2156]: glib-gio-error: Settings schemas ''org.gnome.Sessionmanager" is not installed.

aborting
xinit connnection X server lost.
So it looks like one of the schemas do not get installed.

Roelof

Edit 1:
I tried to register the schemas myself with gconf-schemas --register *.schemas
but it fails with a non found error message. appearently gconf-schemas is not installed.
I found the offending schema here : /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gnome-Sessionmanager.gschema.xml"

As root try running this: glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/

Let me know if it works and I will add it.

EDIT: I've found some other caches that were not generated so I will upload a new ISO today. Sorry. FOr now you can add this module to the modules folder.

Yes. Use: wget --trust-server-names --no-check-certificate

I have updated the ISO on the server.

I downloaded the module by wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/686 ... caches.xzm
But when I activate it by activate 09-caches.xzm I get a message that module data is missing. Corrupt download ?

So I will download the updated iso and try that one.
I hope you also included the fonts cache otherwise a person cannot read anything.
