Suggestion to edit "Appendix B" on the Porteus.org website

The online instructions in "Appendix B - Saving changes to a Windows Filesystem" apply to a machine with a regular BIOS, but not on a UEFI machine. Ed_P explained that quite nicely in another thread on this forum, and I think adding a note about that on "Appendix B" would be very helpful to newbie u...

Re: Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

:good: Ed, it worked! Thank you!!! However, I couldn't disable "Secure Boot", because I can't find such a switch in the BIOS settings of this machine. That's why I abandoned my original plan for a dual- boot setup on the hard drive and decided to use a live USB instead. Yes, that's correct. You don...

Re: Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

Ed, it worked! Thank you!!! I edited /EFI/BOOT/refind.conf to add the path to my .dat file on line 470 and rebooted in "Save Changes" mode without any issues. However, I couldn't disable "Secure Boot", because I can't find such a switch in the BIOS settings of this machine. That's why I abandoned my...

Re: Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

Hi George It seems you have the efi boot screen which in turn means that you have written the changes= line into the wrong File = porteus.conf. you need to write this line into the refind.conf (/EFI/BOOT/refind.conf) But because i do not have any uefi system I'm not able to provide the proper synta...

Re: Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

I think perhaps this is an EFI/BIOS related problem, as Donald suggested. I'll just start over - I'll build another ISO, and mount it on another laptop, to see if that would take me anywhere. And this worked! I reformatted the SanDisk 16gb USB3.0 flash drive, built another ISO (KDE4, with EFI suppo...

Re: Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

brokenman wrote:It could well be. At the boot screen menu, do you see a picture of a house on the water, or a purple screen with a porteus logo?
I see the Porteus logo across the top of the screen, and underneath I have choice between the two boot icons- Windows or Porteus, with F2 offering more boot options.

Re: Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

You porteus.cfg file looks good. Your cheatcode looks good. Lets try one more time from the beginning and if changes aren't working we will move onto creating a linux file system partition if that is an option. Please create your porteussave.dat and change the name to mysave.dat (just to remove con...

Re: Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

In most of your posts, especially your first one you mention you have a data file called porteussave.dat Correct, that's the name of the file, which is also the default setting at Save File Manager. and in your last post you say I have the save.dat My mistake, I meant to say "the .dat file". Sorry ...

Re: Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

Changes to the live system are stored in /mnt/live/memory/changes...you can also look in /opt/porteus-scripts to see the other save options...can't remember offhand cause I never use them. I can't find such directories on my USB. Instead I have mnt/sdb1/boot mnt/sdb1/EFI mnt/sdb1/porteus (and in he...

Re: Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

Hi, Ed: I just tried your suggestion, and still doesn't save changes. The way I'm checking is by creating a blank file on the desktop, and when I reboot, either in "Default" or "Save Changes" mode, I look to see if the file I created is still there. When I try the "Save Changes" boot mode I always g...

Re: Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

I actually I tried adding the full path (/mnt/sdb1/porteus/porteussave.dat) to the .dat file in porteus.cfg, but there was no effect. Also, In the cfg file I see the comment "Normally Porteus saves all changes to the /porteus/changes/ directory on the boot media". But I don's see a directory called ...

[SOLVED] Can't Save Changes on a Live USB

Hello, everyone! I originally wanted to install a Linux OS alongside my Windows 10 on a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge e120 laptop in order to learn my way around Linux and hopefully the command line. However, it turns out I can't disable "Secure Boot" in my BIOS (either Lenovo didn't include the switch for t...
