Re: Printing in MATE [SOLVED]

For those wondering, the 04-firefox.xzm module is in the porteus/base folder. Name the replacement firefox module identically then, just open the base folder as Administrator and replace the original 04-firefox.xzm, painless.

Re: Printing in MATE [SOLVED]

Where is the old module located and how do I assure my menu pointers still launch the browser?

Re: Printing in MATE [SOLVED]

Thanks Jack, now, how do I replace the version that shipped with Porteus? Putting this file in the modules folder and activating it won't remove the original so how do I purge the original? I like to keep my system clean and free of unused software remnants. The current version is 31.3.0 (ESR).

Re: Printing in MATE [SOLVED]

Nice to see you checking up on me @francois. Does MATE allow automatic updates of Firefox? I think I might need a new thread if I continue to remain at v31.0.3.

Re: Printing in MATE [SOLVED]

I found the solution in the link below:

http://hplipopensource.com/node/309

As mentioned above, the missing .ppd file is a proprietary plugin that needs to be downloaded after signing a licensing agreement.

Re: Priting in MATE

Jack, I should have thanked you for the links. I appreciate the attempt at helping but I'll need someone more experienced in these matters. The solution might just be as simple as a directory entry. It looks like there is no printer location in the configuration to me but I'm no expert here.

Re: Priting in MATE

For the record, I had this working in the standard Porteus DE so I'm puzzled why MATE would hiccup. Is this just a missing .ppd problem?

Printing in MATE [SOLVED]

This is my first experience with this Desktop and it's been a slow grind. I had to do the LXTerminal sh command to get it to boot. I have an HP CP1215 printer. It shows up in the available printers but it doesn't print (not even the test page). The troubleshooting output is below: Page 1 (Scheduler ...

Re: Is it time for me to move up to Slackware?

I have just been through some painful weeks on the Slackware learning curve. All your points are incredibly insightful and worth heeding. The simplicity of the porteus distro really does mask its sophistication. I ran my Porteus laptop against an identically configured one running a custom Debian ke...

Re: How do I get msttcorefonts working with Porteus?

francois Why does the module resulting from an rpm to xzm conversion work when an rpm to trgz to xzm module doesn't? I tried both and discovered this curiousity. Is it because the directories change depending on the conversion command used? Where is the active font folder in Porteus? Never mind, I f...

How do I get msttcorefonts working with Porteus? [Solved]

The dearth of font choices on Porteus is one of the few weaknesses of this distro. I tried to address this by copying 438 Truetype fonts from my Windows installation to /.local/share/fonts and ran fc-cache -f -v . The terminal told me the cache succeeded and all 438 fonts were recognized but when i ...

Terminal doesn't recognize my root password? [Solved]

I did a recent install of Porteus on a friend's M4400 and the correct password is not recongnized when doing sudo in terminal. Thunar root access works properly so I know the password is okay. Any hints as to what is wrong?

Is it time for me to move up to Slackware?

Porteus has been a great experience for me. It allowed me to do all I required and has been the easiest, fastest and most usable linux distro I've ever experienced but reading this blog has me considering that it might be time to try Slackware. In short, I am trying to assess what I will give up and...
