Re: Porteus-v1.1rc2-x86_64 ready for testing

Wow! This version is superb! Everything works fantastic and it looks really polished and professional--and it seems a lot of the 1.0 h/w bugs are toast. Great work to all the 1.1 developers!

Re: Porteus pure UEFI booting (no BIOS emulation)

UEFI doesn't look fun or a great 'leap' forward--if anything, something like OpenFirmware is way more extensible and supports straight Forth commands... and why it's not replacing the ancient BIOS and the cheap UEFI will is beyond me... though I think it's part of M$'s evil plan to work with the OEM...

Re: Anyone concerned over UEFI?

I agree on your BIOS/UEFI points strongly (the shift is not a very smart one AT ALL; to add to that, a study a while ago confirmed this). I really believe Apple's closest to great implementation for their AIM/PowerPC architecture was OpenFirmware; the route to (U)EFI with the i686 ( & x86_64 on late...

Re: Anyone concerned over UEFI?

It's not necessarily Unified Extensible Firmware Interface I'm worried about (Ubuntu, for instance, can address Macs with EFI, and PCs with UEFI). It's what *Microsoft* will do to *complement* EFI in their own sneaky way, which would lock out Linux. While I pose the question, "Will Fedora, Ubuntu, a...

MS's new weapon?

Guys, I've noticed that "Secure Boot"/Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) has been a subject of interest as part of the new "Windows 8" release. I'm not sure who else has run Windows Developer Preview on their computers, but it seems to me that MS is focusing a new weapon, cleverly deguised...

Anyone concerned over UEFI?

I know in another post there's talk of what the FSF is doing to fight against this. This one's kinda has a different subject--should we be concerned about it? To look at a little history, the iPod has always had encrypted firmware. Hackers figured out how to solve the problem in the first iPod model...

Re: What is your favourite desktop?

I do not care for Xfce when it is set to the default look and feel, but it's an all-around easy-to-use DE. And, not to sound too awful negative, but... I don't really care for the look and feel of LXDE, personally. KDE's great, but it's big and bulky. Gnome Shell is the greatest innovation since the...

Re: Welcome box being implemented

I have finally decided what will happen with Porteus Settings Assistant, now that the final version made it into Porteus 1.0. Now that the Google Code page for porteus-settings-assistant is pending deletion, I will share my last reiteration of Porteus Settings Assistant ( 2.0 ) to Hamza. From there,...

Re: Welcome box being implemented

I think the more proper title to change this to is "welcome box has been implemented". With the project started by me, and Hamza and fanthom patching it up to be somewhat like the 1.1 version I envisioned, I think after collaboratively releasing another 2.0 with Hamza, I will quit my work for Porteu...

Guys, after the 1.0 release, will the forum still be "active", or will it slow down over the summer and kinda hibernate? :)

Re: Some nice Porteus wallpapers

I noticed that the picture I have referred to has made it into rc3, and it would appear, version 1.0. Guys, I've run Windows 7 (and run it)--and this picture, despite how many sites are freely uploading it as if a Linux picture, is property of MS with the earlier Windows 7 betas. The backdrop used i...
